Clyde Best: English game’s first black superstar who inspired generation

Clyde Best’s father, a naval man, a deputy commissioner in Bermuda’s prison service, embedded a thought in his son’s head when he left for London. Best was 17 and, about a year after signing for West Ham United, would become English football’s first black superstar. “My dad told me you’re not playing for yourself, you’re playing for those people coming after you.”
